SUMMARY:Experiential Learning in a Buddhist Context for Student Well-Being
DESCRIPTION:This is the last A&S Teaching & Learning Community of Practice session of 2023. \nThursday\, December 7\, 2023\, 11 am – 12 pm\, Online | Zoom Registration \nTouching the Earth: Experiential Learning in a Buddhist Context for Student Well-Being \nMichael Ium\, Postdoctoral Fellow\, Department for the Study of Religion \nIn this presentation\, I describe the “touching the earth” project I assigned to students in RLG376: Touching the Earth. The course focused on various Buddhist conceptions of the earth and earth-related practices. To complement their learning and facilitate student well-being\, students chose one of the practices we learned about (such as prostration or walking meditation) and wrote a short essay about it\, engaged in it for multiple sessions\, and journaled about their experience. On the whole\, students found this project the most rewarding aspect of the course\, as it contributed to their individual well-being and enhanced their understanding of the course material.

SUMMARY:Exploring Art & Wellness
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive workshop where we’ll delve into the intersection of art and wellness and explore how art-making can support our mental health and well-being. Dr. Iris Gildea will share her research and insights on art as a means of healing and meaning-making. She will lead us through art-making activities to experience new approaches to art & wellness. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to connect creatively with your mind\, body\, and soul. \n\n\nDr. Iris J. Gildea is an Associate Professor at the University of St. Michael’s College and teaches in the Book & Media Studies Program. She has taught at St. Michael’s for ten years. \nIris’ work and research are at the intersections of art\, media\, trauma and feminist studies. Most of her courses focus on various aspects of critical media studies. She writes and publishes on trauma theory and art as a mode of meaning-making and healing\, often with a focus on survivors of gendered violence and childhood trauma. \nIris received her PhD from the University of Toronto in Comparative Literature with a dissertation on Paul Ricoeur’s phenomenological hermeneutics. She loves the intersections of theory and art\, seeking always to expand structures of knowledge and meaning-making. Outside of her university teaching\, Iris leads poetry and expressive arts workshops in community. She also teaches meditation. When not writing\, teaching or making art\, Iris is in nature hiking with her dog. She splits her time between Cortes Island in British Columbia and Toronto\, Ontario.

SUMMARY:Unfiltered: a Panel with BPMH Faculty
DESCRIPTION:Join BPMH Professors Frances Garrett and Eleanor Weisbaum for an informal chat and light meal\, plus a candid exploration of our lived experience with setbacks & challenges. How do we deal with life’s inevitable setbacks? Can we see them as opportunities? Can we celebrate them as much as we do our “successes”? \nThe PATH program students have invited Frances & Elli to candidly share about their experiences navigating setbacks and challenges. Our aim for this session is to explore together how everyone (even our professors!) can navigate moments of difficulty. \nThis event will be held in person with a live Zoom option – Join our Zoom room at  https://utoronto.zoom.us/j/81387114336 (Meeting ID: 813 8711 4336 / Passcode: 524098)
