SUMMARY:Brochure release: "Supporting Student Well-Being"
DESCRIPTION:This brochure situates BPMH within broader national conversations about student mental health and argues that universities should integrate well-being directly into their educational missions. Rather than treating mental health exclusively as a clinical concern\, BPMH approaches flourishing through interdisciplinary scholarship that combines Buddhist Studies\, psychology\, neuroscience\, public health\, and the humanities. The brochure presents education itself as a powerful contributor to student well-being and positions BPMH as an exemplary response to national recommendations for embedding wellness throughout the curriculum. \nPick up one of these limited-edition brochures\, created by the BPMH Task Force\, at Room 320 in the Jackman Humanities Building.

SUMMARY:Brochure release: "Standing Against Anti-Asian Racism"
DESCRIPTION:This brochure explores the relationship between the University’s commitments to anti-Asian racism initiatives and the proposed closure of the BPMH program. It argues that BPMH advances many of the recommendations articulated in the University’s own Anti-Asian Racism Working Group Report by centring Asian intellectual traditions\, fostering culturally informed approaches to mental health\, and building partnerships with Asian communities. The brochure contends that supporting BPMH is an opportunity for the University to align institutional practice with its publicly stated commitments to equity\, inclusion\, and internationalization. \nPick up one of these limited-edition brochures\, created by the BPMH Task Force\, at Room 320 in the Jackman Humanities Building.

SUMMARY:Podcast release\, episode 3 — "The View from Nowhere"
DESCRIPTION:Can scholars ever stand outside the knowledge they study? Beginning with a dispute over the title of a single university course\, this episode examines larger debates about objectivity\, evidence\, and whose ways of knowing universities recognize as legitimate. Drawing on classroom practices\, student reflections\, and the work of scholars who offered public lectures for the program\, episode 3 of this five-part series in the podcast Buddhist Studies Footnotes argues that contemplative traditions are not merely objects of scientific investigation but can also contribute concepts\, methods\, and questions to contemporary research. As discussions of first-person inquiry\, decolonization\, and reflexive scholarship unfold\, listeners are invited to reconsider the hidden assumptions that shape modern universities—and to ask who ultimately decides what counts as knowledge.

SUMMARY:Brochure release: "Creating an Attention Sanctuary"
DESCRIPTION:This brochure argues that contemporary universities must respond to an emerging “attention crisis” produced by digital economies that commodify human awareness. Drawing on the concept of “human fracking\,” it presents BPMH as an educational “attention sanctuary”—a space that cultivates sustained attention\, contemplation\, dialogue\, and community. It proposes that protecting human attention has become a central educational responsibility and calls for universities to expand learning environments that foster presence rather than distraction. \nPick up one of these limited-edition brochures\, created by the BPMH Task Force\, at Room 320 in the Jackman Humanities Building.

SUMMARY:Brochure release: "The Value of Transdisciplinarity"
DESCRIPTION:This brochure introduces transdisciplinary education as an essential framework for addressing the complex challenges of the twenty-first century. Arguing that issues such as mental health\, climate change\, artificial intelligence\, and social justice transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries\, it highlights BPMH as a model of collaborative\, community-engaged learning that integrates scientific\, humanistic\, and cultural forms of knowledge. The brochure presents transdisciplinary education as a necessary preparation for students seeking to navigate an increasingly interconnected world. \nPick up one of these limited-edition brochures\, created by the BPMH Task Force\, at Room 320 in the Jackman Humanities Building.

SUMMARY:Podcast release\, episode 2 — "The Experiment"
DESCRIPTION:How did an unconventional undergraduate program become an international model for contemplative education? In episode 2 of this five-part series in the podcast Buddhist Studies Footnotes\, we trace the origins of BPMH\, from its roots in socially engaged Buddhism and the teachings of Thích Nhất Hạnh to its pioneering integration of Buddhist Studies\, psychology\, neuroscience\, medicine\, and contemplative science. Through classroom recordings\, faculty reflections\, and student testimonies\, listeners explore an educational experiment that challenged disciplinary boundaries while asking deeper questions about attention\, flourishing\, and the purpose of higher education. As the field of contemplative science grows around the world\, the episode asks why universities remain so uncertain about knowledge that refuses to fit within traditional academic structures.

SUMMARY:Podcast release\, episode 1 — "The Place They Found"
DESCRIPTION:What makes a university program unforgettable? In the opening episode of this five-part series in the Buddhist Studies Footnotes podcast\, Frances Garrett introduces the University of Toronto’s Buddhism\, Psychology\, and Mental Health (BPMH) program through the voices of students whose lives it transformed. As students describe finding an intellectual home where neuroscience\, philosophy\, psychology\, and Buddhist Studies could be explored together\, a portrait emerges of a rare academic community built on mentorship\, curiosity\, and belonging. But despite what a uniquely transformative experience students find this undergraduate minor\, in 2024 they were suddenly prevented from joining it. The story reported on in this series begins with a question: what happens when a university fails to recognize the communities it has created? \nFind the episode on Castos at The Place They Found or on the usual podcast platforms.

SUMMARY:Brochure release: "The Manifesto" & "The Complaint"
DESCRIPTION:“The  Manifesto” articulates the vision and demands of the BPMH Task Force\, a coalition of students\, alumni\, faculty\, and community supporters mobilized in 2026 to oppose the proposed closure of the BPMH program. It argues that the suspension of enrolment into a thriving\, internationally recognized program reflects broader questions about university governance\, transparency\, and accountability\, while contradicting institutional commitments to student well-being\, anti-Asian racism initiatives\, transdisciplinary education\, and community engagement. The manifesto presents BPMH as a distinctive model of higher education that integrates contemplative science\, non-Eurocentric knowledge traditions\, experiential learning\, and student flourishing. It concludes with a call for the immediate reversal of the enrolment suspension\, a transparent and evidence-based review process grounded in meaningful consultation\, and renewed institutional investment in a program that exemplifies the values the University publicly professes. \n“The Complaint” documents the handling of the proposed closure of the BPMH Program between 2023 and 2026\, arguing that the process departed significantly from the University’s established standards of governance\, quality assurance\, and procedural fairness. It outlines concerns regarding the disregard of a positive external program review\, the reliance on an inadequately informed working group\, the dissemination of inaccurate information\, the suspension of enrolment prior to any formal closure process\, and the failure to undertake meaningful consultation with faculty\, students\, alumni\, and community partners. The complaint further examines the cumulative effects of these administrative actions on the program’s academic viability\, research partnerships\, fundraising\, and international reputation\, as well as the governance concerns subsequently raised by the University of Toronto Faculty Association. It concludes by requesting independent review and remedial action to restore transparency\, accountability\, and compliance with University policy while safeguarding the integrity of academic decision-making. \nPick up one of these limited-edition brochures\, created by the BPMH Task Force\, at Room 320 in the Jackman Humanities Building.
