Podcast Release, Episode 5 — What Would Really Be Lost?

October 6 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

The final episode of this five-part series in the podcast Buddhist Studies Footnotes asks the question that lies beneath the entire series: what is a university for? Returning to the voices of students, alumni, faculty, clinicians, and community partners, Frances Garrett reflects on what the proposed loss of BPMH reveals about higher education itself. Contrasting mindfulness as an isolated wellness tool with an education rooted in history, ethics, community, and social responsibility, the episode argues that universities have an obligation not only to transmit knowledge but also to cultivate the conditions for human flourishing. The conclusion is both a reflection on the legacy of the BPMH program and a broader meditation on the future of universities in an age marked by disciplinary fragmentation, mental health challenges, and growing demands for more engaged, humane, and transformative forms of education.
