What is Mental Health?: A Workshop on Student Un/wellness with Dr. Mimi Khúc

Dec 6, 2022 01:30-3:00 PM on Zoom

What do we mean when we say “mental health”? What do unwellness and wellness actually look and feel like, especially for students? How do we identify and address our mental health needs? In this interactive discussion, participants will collectively define mental health, diagnose their collective unwellness, and begin exploring what structures of care they need to help them nurture the kind of mental health they want.

Mimi Khúc, PhD, (she/her) is a writer, scholar, and teacher of things unwell. An adjunct lecturer in Disability Studies, sometimes at Georgetown University, she is the 2023 Scholar/Artist/Activist in Residence for FLOURISH: Community-Engaged Arts and Social Wellness at the University of Toronto Scarborough and Managing Editor of The Asian American Literary Review. Her work includes Open in Emergency, a hybrid book-arts project decolonizing Asian American mental health; the Asian American Tarot, a reimagined deck of tarot cards; and the Open in Emergency Initiative, an ongoing national project developing mental health arts programming with universities and community spaces. Her forthcoming creative-critical, genre-bending book on mental health and a pedagogy of unwellness, dear elia: Letters from the Asian American Abyss (Duke University Press), is a journey into the depths of Asian American unwellness at the intersections of ableism, model minoritization, and the university, and an exploration of new approaches to building collective care.
